Welcome to Beside You

There was a time when I didn’t understand how someone could grieve so deeply over the loss of a dog. I could appreciate the sadness, but I couldn’t fully comprehend the depth of it. Looking back, I realize that what I didn’t understand wasn’t dogs. It was my own relationship with connection.

Over time, through age, loss, and the quiet work of becoming more open—steps forward, steps backward—I began to see that my inability to understand had less to do with the bond people shared with their dogs and more to do with my own capacity to fully receive that kind of love. Not because I didn’t want it, but because I was still learning how to access it. This realization continues to add color to how I see dogs.

Dogs have an extraordinary way of loving us. They don’t keep score the way our bodies do. They don’t define us by yesterday the way we hold grudges and harbor resentments. They don’t wait for us to become more deserving before offering affection the way we go silent and withdraw. They meet us where we are, returning us again and again to what matters most—presence, forgiveness, play, curiosity, and unconditional love. Perhaps that’s why losing them can feel so devastating. They don’t simply share our lives; they quietly become part of who we are.

Beside You was born from this understanding.

This is a place to explore the remarkable bond we share with our dogs and the deeper truths those relationships reveal about being human. Together, we’ll reflect on companionship, joy, grief, love, loss, presence, and the quiet ways those who walk beside us shape our lives long after their footprints have faded.

Welcome to Beside You.

I have a feeling our dogs have more to teach us than we ever imagined.
